So Long For Now

So Long For Now

A Poem by therisa

I sit here
Wondering
How things might have been
If I opened up myself
Earlier to my parents
When I was
In my late teens.

Instead of
Having to endure eighteen years
Of self-denial of my true self
As the stress level
Elevated to the point
I started to envy
The dead.

Only by accident
Did mom find out about me
When I answered my apartment door
Wearing a navy blue floral skirt
On a Canada Day long weekend.

I know hindsight is perfect
As I should have
Handle things so differently
Knowing mom
Does not handle change well.

But the past is the past
And I stop looking backwards
If I want to move forwards
With my life
And the transitioning
Into a woman.

Good-bye past
It is time for both of us
To part company
On friendly grounds
Knowing you are

Only a memory away
Should I need you.
