D'Oh

D'Oh

A Poem by therisa

Outside the night howls
With a ferociousness
Known only
To those who
Prey upon others.

As the winds
Slash through you
Like a thousand sharp knives
Thrown at your shivering body
Ready to penetrate it
Stealing whatever warmth
Your body can generate.

Turning you
From the brave hunter
To the timid game
Ready to bolt
At the slightest sound
Heard by you.

Until you realized
You have left
A bedroom window open.

Hastily
You close it
As you slip back

Into the night.

Very powerful opening stanza - great descriptive verse. Good stuff all the way through, actually - lots of visual imagery: slashing knives, penetrating flesh, stealing warmth, and it culminates nicely with the stanza describing the change from hunter to game. Only to discover... the window was left open. Nice touch! Only suggestion would be to lose "Upon discovery" in last stanza, don't think you need it!
