Engage Your Mind First

Engage Your Mind First

A Poem by therisa

I remember a time
When it was acceptable
To make jokes
Or write funny pieces
About visible minorities
And everyone be laughing.

Wisely
Those time are
No longer acceptable
By mainstream society.

Why is it
Still acceptable by people
To use dated stereotypes
About the transcommunity
Which continues the damage
Experienced by us.

Tarring the entire community
With the prostitute label
When in reality
Only a small percentage
Are forced to
As a method of survival.

Or all transwomen are
In reality
Nothing more than
Gay men
Wearing women’s clothing.

Nothing could be
So far from the true
As transwomen
Span the sexual spectrum.

Whether we are
Heterosexual
Lesbian
Or Bisexual
Just like
Genetic woman are.

Before you say
Chill out to me
Just think.

How would you feel
If I wrote
About your community
Using harmful dated stereotypes
Like you are
About mine.
