Balance, At What Cost?

Balance, At What Cost?

A Poem by therisa

I do not understand
Why people fear Death
As if
I am cursing them
By mentioning Her?

Have we
As a society
Lost contact
With the idea of balance
The yin and the yang
Upon the cosmic wheel of life.

By placing our trust
In modern technology
As the wonder cure-all
When in reality
A delaying tactic
At best.

Gaining a precious day month
Even years
With our love ones
But at what cost
To their quality of life?

Seeing them
Suffering in chronic pain
For years on end
Knowing modern medicine
Is only masking the disease
Not curing it.

Before you label me
As being callous
Or worse
I witnessed the final 13 years
Of my dad’s life
As he slowly died.

At what point
Do we
As an individual
And as a society say
Enough is enough!

Placing the proper balance
Between our ability
And should we
Attempt to save every life
Regardless of the cost
To the individual and society.

Only stopping
When the family requests it
Or becomes too expensive
To continue treatment
Indefinitely
On a love one.

Not an easy decision
To have to make
But one
We will face
As the baby boomers age.
