Why The Distance?

Why The Distance?

A Poem by therisa

Do not understand
How a parent can
Easily accept being told
By their adult child
They have mental health problems.

Yet find it almost impossible
Even after five long years
To accept their child
Is a Transsexual
Or to say their name.

What is it
That prevents them
From accepting that child
Which only the external shell
Has been changed.

The emotional bond
Between a parent and a child
Does not break
Even if they are no longer
In their birth gender.

Rather
Grows stronger
As both sides
Start the healing process
So long delayed.

So please
Have an open heart
For a child
Like myself
Who only wants love.
