Aftermath

Aftermath

A Poem by therisa

She stood alone
On the front porch
Whose paint was fast
Fading away
Under Nature’s harsh touch
But she did not care.

As she waited
Quietly for the visitor
Who would
Never show up.

Although
She already knew
Clutching a crumpled letter
From the military
In her left hand.

Describing how heroic
Lindsay was
In saving the lives
Of those innocent children
Under heavy fire
From the enemy.

A steady stream of tears
Ran down her cheeks
Unchecked
Forming small pools
Upon the porch.

Hoping the letter
Lied to her
But it was a false hope.

As two officers
From the military
Briefly visited her
Yesterday
With the sad news.

Blaming herself
For the disastrous good-bye
Which she threaten Lindsay
With divorce
If she went on
Another tour.

“What ifs’...”
Flooded her mind
With pent up
Anger and guilt
Over her behaviour
So long ago.

As reality sunk in
Nothing
With bring her lover
Back again.

As the sky opened up
Letting a full moon
Shine down upon her.

Gracing her
With It’s appearance
And bathing her
Within It’s healing light.

For one last time
She wiped her eyes
Dry
Before moving on
With her life.

The crumpled letter
Dropped from her hands
Forgotten
As she went inside.
