What Is Female?A Poem by therisa
We attach labels
To everything That we see Or experience In our lives. But What do these labels Really mean Beyond being An artificial construct? A question I find myself Asking. As the debate Is reignited By Caitlyn Jenners emergence To the world As a transwoman. Many times I have been told By cisgender women. That my experiences As a transwoman Don't count In living my life As a female. True I wasn't born With ovaries Fallopian tube Or a vagina. But It hasn't lessen My desire Or want. In carrying a baby Through a full term pregnancy In giving birth To my own child. And no This isn't a fetish Or a phase By me. Which Some belief To be true. Rather An expression From the deepest corner Of my soul. In which I am baring everything Down to The very core Of my essence. I wonder How many cisgender women Could pass the same scrutiny That's being applied To transwomen? Given How the societal definition Has changed Over the decades. Isn't it time To embrace each other And acknowledge The common barriers We face? Instead of Tearing each other Apart. While Building An equitable society Which recognizes The fluidity of female. In all Of its shades And forms. © 2015 therisa |
