A Girl In Blue

A Girl In Blue

A Poem by therisa

A young child
Forced into hiding
By expressing
Her true self.

In a world
Filled with fear
And hatred
Of anything different.

Never mind
She should challenge
Accepted societal norms.

What it means
To be male
Or female.

Encountering opposition
Whether explicit
Or implicit violence
Against her.

Shattering
Her developing sense
Of self.

Needing 28 years
Before the girl felt safe
Once more
To come out
And feel the sun.

Knowing
Her time of hiding
Is over.

Author's Note

therisa
As a child, growing up during the 1970s, I had to hide my true gender, as society wasn't ready, to accept a transchild. Even now, there are parts of the world, this poem would be placing my life, in jeopardy, by posting it.
