PTSD

PTSD

A Poem by therisa

Silence.

The sound

One prays for

When the past is screaming

In an unrelenting blast.

Stirring up

Bitter old memories

Best left behind

But can't.

Of times

Which the body

And the brain are

Subjected to extreme trauma

That it wasn't design for.

Memories hidden

And tuck away

Behind mental walls.

So very flimsy

And yet

Incredibly strong.

Until triggered

By something

So innocent

Like a song word

Or a smell.

Leaving you trapped

Frozen

In that moment

Of time.

Unable to move

Your terror ridden body

Until the moment

Has expired.

And reality resumes

Minus the time

Which you have lost

In the past.

Leaving a hole

In your consciousness

Never to be

Regained.

Author's Note

therisa
PTSD can strike anyone, from a young child, who is abused, by a love one/friend, to those, who serve, on the front line, like the first responders (firemen, police and paramedics). These are few of the causes for PTSD, as they are more than I can list here.

Trapping the sufferer, in a world of mental angst, which no known cure exist, only coping strageties. This, I know, from first hand experience, as a victim of physical and mental abuse, by family members and schoolyard bullying, which last for most of my childhood.

i used to wonder why i didn't have memories like other people, then i started seeing glimpses of what i had forgotten, and i can't decide which is better remembering or forgetting
