Memories Of A Bygone Era

Memories Of A Bygone Era

A Poem by therisa
"

Memories of Oma and Opa.

"

"Venus

That tickles"

Rubbing her ears

Against my left hand.

As memories

Of my Opa and Oma

Flood through my mind

On a Saturday morning.

Long forgotten

Since Oma's burial

In June 30, 1996

After her year long battle

With cancer.

A mountain of a woman

Even to my mature eyes

Topping over 6 feet

As we exchanged

Welcoming hugs and kisses.

The glue

Which held my dad's

Immediate family

Together.

Especially

After Opa's death

On my birthday

In 1984.

A very somber year

For myself

As all celebrations

Were cancelled

And I lost myself

In tears.

Funny

How opposites attract

For Opa stood

About 5 foot tall

If wearing

His elevated shoes.

Welcoming smile

Never far away

From their faces

When greeting us

The grandchildren.

Always offering

Something to drink

Or eat.

You felt hurt

If you said

"No thanks" to her offer.

Sigh.

How I wish

I was

A small child

Again.

Able to run

Through the woodlot

Without any cares

Filling myself

On wild Raspberries.

Picking posies

Of wildflowers

To decorate

The window sill.

Knowing

Everything was safe

With your presence

Nearby.
