Echoes From The Past

Echoes From The Past

A Poem by therisa

Am
The child
Of a parent.

Who knows
The true meaning
Of freedom.

Given
By the actions of other
In liberating Nazi occupied
Europe.

As
Today marks
The 70th anniversary
Of the Warsaw Uprising.

Which
Undermanned
And underarmed
Jewish resistance fighters
Held the German army
To a standstill
For a month.

As
Questions
Whirl around me
About society's commitment
To freedom
Itself.

Given
The upswing
In hate motivated crimes
Against minorities.

As
A bunker mentality
Takes root and flourishes
In these tough economic
Times.

Never realizing
The societal damage
These actions have
Upon everyone.

As
Chants of
"Never again"
Are fading out.

In
Society's conscious
Memory.
