Chapter 6 - What goes back... Runs deepA Chapter by Prateek Kumar Tripathi
March 17, 2016
Amidst the fog, two figures approach each other, both from different directions. While One looks Calmer, another’s in a hurry. They meet in a place particularly quite with an eerie vibe attached. The shores unusually quite with no more than a couple gusts of wind… “You got the tag on him?”, asked the man in the brown coat with neatly polished grey shoes. He had a soar voice and wore a muffler covering his face with odd looking glasses. “If I didn’t, I wouldn’t have had wasted my time covering 3 miles”, panting, perhaps from running, replied the slim man wearing a white suit slightly taller, “What’s the catch?” “He doesn’t want to get him involved just yet…”, replied in a calm yet serious tone “What!”, with no pauses, “After all we went through? Know how far I went to search for him? The lengths I’ve gone to?” “Doesn’t matter. What’s said is to be done. Its his order after all”, still calm. “Then let him know of the lengths I’ve gone to! I am not bothering with this anymore! You tell him exactly that!”, he started speaking in accents… “Look you can keep on rattling… but like I said ‘It’s his order!’. He must have thought into it, and he’s always right. You know that better” To that, “When are we meeting next?” “You’ll know when the time’s right!” After giving some thought into it, “You sure it’s him? We’ve had some lookalikes before…” *pause* “It is him!” Present Day ‘Bursting through the gate, I could very well see this ‘old factory’, which looked more like an abandoned mansion… rotting through the ages with no one to look after it…’ I was lost… to the beauty of this mansion… just imagining how it must have looked before… On second thought, “Ohhh…”, nearly forgot my followers. They stood before the gates and none entered… Pretty weird for the workers to not enter their factory, be it a mansion. “Not gonna chase after me anymore! Huh! Thought so! You know better than to chase after a Palmer”, in my most sincere feelings. “It’s not that!”, a worker replied, “You were supposed to enter!” “Huh?”, again in my most sincere feelings… “Boss wants to meet you. So he ordered us to escort you to his cabin” A minute long wait… ‘Would it had cost so much trouble if I heard that earlier, if he said that earlier…’ “Then why stop there? Are you perhaps not allowed to enter?” “That!”, the guard replied. The one who was terrified at first then… you know the rest. “We are not allowed to enter that place. Best you be on your way now that you’ve entered.” “Yeah! I know that. You all can go now. Its fine I can find my way, you don’t have to be worried.” None went their ways but kept on watching what I was about to do next. To their easiness, I carried on… and after some steps, the workers followed. Going forward, I had one thought ‘Where’s the guy who rejected my entry? He’s nowhere to be seen…’ But I had bigger things to worry for now. First my brother, it goes beyond words how terrified I was thinking of him. My legs were numb the whole time, like all those years of doing legs were pointless. Not to mention his disappearance… perhaps he was kidnapped… maybe worse yet I had to keep moving forward. December 13, 2019 The man exiting his car almost hurriedly, approaching the guy in brown coat… “You were right! He was right! I did a background check on the guy and… and… " The other man assuring, “Yes, Its him. It’s why I told you to have faith!”, it seemed he waited for some while now… With the slim guy nodding, he continued, “Now all we have to do is wait…” At that, “Wait!? We waited for months! Now’s the time to act. Just… why wait when he’s right there? Wasn’t that one of our problems in luring him? Now that he’s at the place he should be, what’s the point in waiting?” “Look. We’ve waited for years and years, searching, craving for this! One moment! And now its here, right in our grasp! Its almost done”, putting his hand on the guy’s shoulder, closing in, “Now… Listen to me. And by that you’re listening to ‘him’. We need to delay ‘this execution’ for some years…” Flabbergasted on that remark, “What? By wait he meant years? Seriously?” Confirming this change of plans, “But Why? Why Years?” With his soar voice he continued, “It needs to be perfect! All seven should be present! And they’ve all agreed to it. Some members are not present in this country and will only return on Sky day! So we’ll have to wait for them” “Sky day? But that happens once every 2-3 years! What if he ran away after all we’ve gone through?” The guy started smiling and with a calm voice...“Someone’s gonna take care of that!” “Who?” “The tallest member… Sir Jordan.” Present Day Now that I was standing right at the door, I didn’t like it here. As a matter of fact, I wanted none of this! yet… “Here it goes”, my hands ready to push when the gates opened and a guy came at the door… “You’re Palmer?”, he asked “Yes, that would be me” “Hmph” with that he let me in, “Go Straight, Stairs, third floor, corner room with silver plates at the door and do knock thrice” “Okaay…”, how would I forget this. Except ‘What is this place?’ It was totally a mansion with bright lights, good polished furniture’s, servants cleaning the stairs… Where’s the factory? This was no factory, clearly a place where someone lives or for some people. So that means the outside was just a cover? No one can possibly imagine a view so dazzling after seeing how worse the exterior looks. Are they perhaps hiding this place? Or Hiding from someone! “You can go ahead”, the guard reminded me. “Ah! Yes. Of course”, slowly climbing the stairs, looking at the servants only to remind myself once again they’re all avoiding me! *4 minutes gap* It’s the third floor! Now the corner room… ah! There… The Door indeed had silver plates but they carried no name. I knocked once and entered… to find a pitch black room in this dazzling mansion. On harder notice, books were scattered everywhere… but no one was present? “You’re supposed to knock three times! Did you forget!”, said the guy standing between the curtains at the end of the room, gazing towards the yard. “Maybe an…”, he cut my words… “That man never lies! Nor should you”, ending with a pause likely to say more… So he’s ‘that guy’. “You Blake?” “And so it seems... ”, finally turning towards me, “You made a big mistake coming here!” --- to be continued © 2022 Prateek Kumar Tripathi |
