What are you afraid of....

What are you afraid of....

A Poem by Shannon
"

Thank you Reece for the answer and the inspiration.

"
I once asked a question
Of someone I love,
"Is your biggest fear rejection?,
Or the bruise from a shove?"

His eyes clouded with thought
His body became completely still
"I'm not afraid of anything,
Never have been, never will..."

To this is replied with a sarcastic chuckle,
And incredulously, I began to laugh,
Asking what fears hide beneath chained buckle
Hidden from the cold winters draft

Once more he grew quiet,
Somewhat more serious than before
Hinting at an answer silent
The it murmured behind a closed door

Many a year had passed
And i had sat, cleaning dust from books
When from behind antique pages that had managed to last
A single note floated, yellowed and aged in looks

The not was clear and sharp
The message, held obvious intent
And began with a line like a harp
"It is to my greatest lament..."

If you are reading this, then my dear I am gone
Obviously lust turned to bliss, for we were both wrong
You asked me once, what I feared most at heart
And now I do believe it time my love, that i fill that part
I fear no mortal wound, nor words of spite
I do not lose sleep, over haunting images of the night
My only fear is watching those I care for in pain
To see those i love mistreated, to much my disdain

To observe you my love, try so hard to not let me know
And in the end, to know that you would let me go
You did it for me, which I will never understand,
Though i granted your every wish, met your every demand
You still couldn't stay, said you couldn't stand what you saw
But tell my beauty, was there any problem at all?
Was there really something so wrong, with holding you tight
As you cried and sobbed, from night to night

Something so disturbing with my support, in your every action and whim
Or was it just, that you found someone better...someone like him?
Have your wandering ways, lead you so far astray
From the path that we had set out on that day
The you could no longer tell, our loving heaven, from a deceitful hell?
My only opinion of this matter my sweet... is that I hope he treats you well..."

This is a beautiful poem which at first I thought was about fear of loss but it's about fearing the person you love will not be treated well and that is what you call selfless love. It is the purest and truest type of love and anyone who has experienced it is lucky. Great job!
