a battle of epic proportions.

A Story by Vanessa

breathe in. breathe out. the repetitive motion goes on for hours as her eyes are closed in the still of early hours of the morning.

suddenly, her breathing stops. and in an instant, her eyes flip open.

“"-YOU THINK TIME WOULD PASS ME BY, CAUSE YOU KNOW I’D WALK A THOUSAND MILES IF I COULD JUST SEE YOU TONIGHT.

confusion runs through her mind: “what’s going on?” “who’s talking?!” then it all comes flooding back to her: the late night, school work on top of school work, the restless night, and the realization that it’s happening all over again. WASH. RINSE. REPEAT.

she groans. rubs her face. pleads with the alarm clock to stop wailing its incessant noise. she turns to face the most despised thing in her life. the neon green numbers glare from the corner of the room mocking and taunting her. “time to wake up, sleeping beauty!” “hope you got some sleep last night; oh wait, you didn’t!”

ten minutes pass and she is still in bed. “i’m just resting for a bit,” she assures herself. “i’ll get up after this next song; it’s my favorite!” when in reality, she always skips it on her ipod. next, comes the counter argument from her conscience: “no! get up now or you’ll regret it…” every morning, this debate ensues and currently, conscience holds the title of undisputed champion…

she sighs. turns the blanket off of her. sits on the edge of the bed. and hangs her head in defeat.

blindly, she shuffles to declare war on the noisemaker. with one swift attack, it is silenced for good. or, at least, another twenty four hours. next, she attempts a feat so dangerous, it could prove lethal, in fact. taking a deep breath, she turns the switch. bright, dazzling, and paralyzing light floods into the room. she tries to shield her eyes, but it is too late and the damage is already done. instant pain surges through her eyes.

she is fully awake now with the possibility of cornea damage. GREAT.
