Unwanted

Unwanted

A Poem by Alexa Christine

They say I need to give up my passion

To make it in this world

So I take the recognition I deserve

And serve the public with what I don’t believe

So what everyone perceives about me is safe

Safe from the alternate routes society deems unwanted

The streams of unwanted creativity and thinking

Threaten the delicate threads of what we’re supposed to be

Thinking for ourselves constituted meds being shoved down our throats

And hours sitting on a shrink’s couch

Because we’re crazy enough to be admitting that we have our own ideas

And maybe we have our own personalities

That set us apart from the accepted realities of today

They say we’ll never make it

If we don’t conform to what is still accepted

But they don’t realise how we’re affected

By their eyes looking down on who we are

We are the unwanted

The people who are haunted by society

The people who realise we are not the same

We are not carbon copies of those who are named popular

We are not the Barbies and Kens of the world

We are the one and only versions of us

And trust us when we say that we won’t back down

Against society when they try to drown out our voiced

Because of the choices we make to stand out

We will shout from the rooftops “We are the unwanted

And we will never stop our creativity”

So screw society and its social rules

We won’t stand and watch their cruel ways

As they try to take away who we are

So we’ll reach for the stars while they’re still on the ground

Fighting to get to the latest round of social normality first

This is the sad reality that we live in

We’ve come to the point where its a sin not to be a sheep

And it’s normal for a girl to weep over being one pound overweight

Its normal for them to hurl their guts up to fit in a size zero

And why is that wanted?

They have spat in our faced because we bring them shame

Because their races to popularity are more important

Than actually having meaningful relationships

They have chipped away at their morality for so long

It would be surprising if they actually had any left

We will never be like them

Because there is no remedy for what they’ve become

There is nothing that can be done to fix them

But there is something we can do to keep from becoming sheep

We need to stand together

Maybe not hand in hand but we can’t back down

And we can’t attack without strength in numbers

Nothing can be done by hiding in the shadows

We need to come forth so everyone knows that we can't conform to them

Stand up for ourselves!

Don’t let them crush our creativity and brag about it like a trophy on a shelf

Show them what a minority can do!

But we’re scared to, because after all, majority rules

We could be fools in their eyes if we spoke up

So we suffer and choke on their uniform, condescending words

In the end, maybe we are like them

We've been hiding who we really are and sending false signals of morality

So we can survive in the reality of what the world has become

Its such a fixed system that no one who’s different can come up with a way to make it

They’ve made it so we can’t be who we are

Because the stars of today lead the way with a false sense of security

“You’ll be okay if you follow up, but you'll never be good enough”

Is the message that everyone is forced to swallow to survive

They strive to be good enough even though they know they never will

So they go along with it and fake their confidence

To make it appear as though they enjoy the drawn out process

Of becoming a stereotypical toy for society to play with

They’ve turned us into pawns to be manipulated

And while we’ve yearned for freedom from this social oppression

They label us with names like freakshow to try to keep us down

They call us psychos for being who we are

With the hope that they will rise to become stars by pushing us around

Because it would be wrong in their eyes not to beat us like a drum

While we put our headphones in to listen to the songs of our life

To drown out their cloned insults.

Will we ever break free?

Can we ever take our thoughts and share them without fear?

Or will we be forever caught in their grasp?
