Paper Bully

Paper Bully

A Poem by thenakedverse

The blank sheet of paper taunts me

Like the bully he is,

Gloating in his nakedness and

Mocking my attempts to confront him.

He raises a single eyebrow,

Daring me to pierce his skin with lead.

But I know how this will end.

I’ll hold my tongue as he claims another victory.

He’ll leave the scene unscathed

And I’ll look away in shame,

Only later imagining all the things I could’ve said.

I’ll sharpen every pencil

Thinking next time will be different.

I’ll practice all my puns and witty metaphors,

Pretending to build up some nerve,

All the while wishing Mom hadn’t taught me that

To take the high road is to walk away.

Writers block couldn't be explained more beautifully than this piece right here..
The irony of writing such a creative expressive poem about not being able to be creative, to think or to act out thought on paper. One of my favorites on this site. Great job.

The blank sheet, it calls and we crave, only to come back another day. I liked this, it was simple though a complete story of what we all seem to go through from time to time.

Thank you for sharing.

Ok, only seen two works but think you may well be one of the best talents I have had the privilege to read. From the first line I was consumed and even my strongest will could not have stopped me reading on, infact my dinner is burned and the kitchen is on fire but who cares!

fantastic but this..... All the while wishing Mom hadn’t taught me that
To take the high road is to walk away..........simply poignant. You get so much depth in a to a single line. Depth that drips with meaning, intention and delivery. This should be read much more than the 72 so far.

Aww this is such a beautiful poem !! and don't take the high way, go for it and don't be afraid to confront that sheet!!
"Only later imagining all the things I could’ve said." - always happens.

Brilliant. Not only is this a true poem about poetry but I feel you have unintentionally created a new type of poetry ... blank verse... not the traditional blank verse but literally no poem at all... a blank sheet. A plain piece of paper with nothing on it. One needs only the intention of writing, the pen or pencil to hovver threateningly in the vicinity of the crisp sheet of parchment. That'll turn the table and wipe the smug smile off his face.

God, I absolutely love this. It is the perfect depiction of writer's block. I cannot agree with you anymore. I think that you represent all writers in this poem. Thank you for the great write. Keep it up.

I understand the writer's block concept, we've all suffered through it at one time or another, I'm perplexed that that paper has a gender, albeit 'he'...wondering if this does not have some alternative meaning to it, just my thoughts. Nice read.

I like this!! One thing that I don't have in common, it seems, is having this "writer's block". I am never searching because I don't TRY. I go through emotions that lend their NEED to make me want to start one, and then it's just a search around my head for words. Others think it may be a little funny to only read dictionaries and Encyclopedias growing up, but I wonder if that is the enemy to "writer's block". I CAN relate to the paper bully, though!! lol I've scribbled on my shoes, skin, abandoned buildings, school desks etc..... I have never stopped, but they were all in short little bursts. This year was the first year they went to poem. I don't like the last line. I understand it, but when you get that frustration building, THAT'S when you start taking notes because something is trying to break through the distraction and fear of settling in the moment, and you need to take advantage of it whilst it lasts!! I like this poem..... xoxo -Mark
