Night Life

A Poem by Marni A. K.
"

Assignment 3, experiment with hemistiches (not worrying about alliteration, syllables, or accents).

"

Up before dawn,         deer, doe, and

us, awake                    walking, wandering

to familiar                   destinations.

Emerging one             by one

from the darkness,      only noticed

by the rustling             of the grass

and shoes scraping      the asphalt.

Crickets chirping        incessantly from inside

the dark crevices         of stones,

yielding only to           the footsteps of man,

climbing the same       stairs traveled

every morning.            I cannot see them,

but they see me.          So early, so

seemingly still.            I mean no harm.

I am no threat              to the invisible.

Why, then, do I            have the ability

To hush                        a species?
