CrescendoA Poem by Andrea GreeneEverything is sudden, too sudden.Someone's been suspended 6th graders are drinking Relationships are changing Betrayals on the daily and heartbreaking decisions every minute A tornado, a crescendo, I don't know what any of this is, Something loud and louder to get lost in, I want a say but nobody's listening to silence We're too young for this In a course of a week, almost a day, Friends are sworn enemies Young love turns ugly Simple happiness finding no space In rumors, in lies, in all of this And it's all so loud I may not have said it yet But I get really overwhelmed by loud noises And very quickly So non-stop quick decisions all screamed at you It's exhausting I'm so damn tired People I know are doing drugs And having sex And going to parties And skipping class And getting suspended for saying ignorant, hateful things For Christ's sake, people, We're still kids! We're thirteen and fourteen years old! This is the time to first fall in love And make friends And go out in the sun and be happy! What are we doing? We're cutting off our own childhoods, it seems. And it's all happening now. You're either swept into the dramatics or you're lame, The lines are being defined for me clearer by the day, But it's so hard to focus. I don't want to know where I fit in to all this madness yet. I just want to be happy. That seems too difficult a request.
