To Scratch the Surface of BeautyA Poem by J. LandWhen Night breaks the horizon And darkness infuses the atmosphere I am a blind man who waits, Looks toward Heaven and longs To feel the scales fall away from my eyes. The stars sing faintly Their humming song of vast and empty distance Flash their secrets across the spectrum; But to appraise these twinkling specks Is to scratch the surface of Beauty. The night Sky keeps no secrets from the soul. It carries the mind across a universe Too vast to understand, yet small enough, Contained within this child's imagination, Absorbing wonder and awe and the grace That fills the empty, sublime spaces between these stars.
