Mourning Praise

Mourning Praise

A Poem by J. Land

Sunlight gleams on the dew
Those little tear drops from the earth
Settle each morning on the ground
Evaporate into the atmosphere
As the heat of daylight
Grips the terrain
Towering ridges, giants in slumber
Stretch upward to tickle the clouds
Garments lavished in green and white
Against a sapphire dulled by the hazy ether
Rivers roil their muddy trek
Inexorably melding with an ocean
Fragile as a star fish on its beach
Night brings new visions
Star filled eternity lay just above
Earth exhales briefly in its rest and
Once again weeps its mourning praise
Upon the ground, its tears flush
Across the canvas of its form

You really do a fantastic job of putting the reader right into the scene. Your descriptions were so beautifully penned and I loved the double meaning you put into mourning. The poem was excellent in its entirety, but that last four lines were just perfect.

I love the vivid imagery and the cycle of the day. You've painted a beautiful picture with your words. I get a feeling from this poem that people are just small and insignificant in comparison to this giant, interconnected, larger than life Earth. So often we don't stop to notice the world around us. When I stop and really pay attention it's a moment of awe-struck, heavy on my chest, "Wow!"
Great poem!

I think you might want the word canvas instead of canvass in the last line.

Thanks for the tip. I'm stunned I didn't catch that before and will change it.
I always love reading your work.. they are full of vivid imagery. The way you have described it to be tears of the earth is something unique.. the title"mourning praise"- the brilliant oxymoron suits the poem aptly..how the earth cries in the night but the first rays of the sun hail the drops with praise.. lovely poem :)

James, I always find your rich, poetic descriptions to be enthralling; is almost as if looking upon a freshly painted canvas, the terrain and colors drawing you in deeper to the unique perspective offered. No complaints on this one, well done.
