Break UpA Story by thehiddlethingsA pic inspired drabble
“I don’t know. I thought I did but I wouldn’t have done it if I loved you, right? I mean you don’t do that sort of thing if you’re in love.”
Steve stared up at the kitchen counter tiles from his position on the floor. Those stupid f*****g tiles that Alice had insisted they got when they bought the flat even though they were overpriced and hideous. “How many times?” he asked carefully, not sure if he wanted to even know the answer. Still, the question was out there now " no taking it back. Her pause was telling. That many huh? What’s the matter, struggling to count? “Three,” she said eventually. Liar. “Once after Jay’s birthday party and then a couple of times since.” “So Jay knows.” It was more of a statement but she took it as a question anyway. “No… well… I don’t know. I mean.. I never told him but maybe he figured something out. He’s a smart guy.” “Thanks.” “Oh come on. You know that’s not what I meant. You didn’t know because I was trying to save you from it, not because you were stupid.” “That supposed to make me feel better? What? Am I meant to thank you for trying to spare my feelings? Shame it didn’t stop you from f*****g him in the first place. Don’t do me any favours, alright?” “I couldn’t lie to you anymore. It wasn’t fair. I should have told you as soon as it happened-“ “Look,” Steve interrupted, pushing himself up off the floor. “You can stop now. You can stop pretending you give a s**t about my feelings because it doesn’t change the fact that you slept with him.” “Steve I-“ “Just STOP IT alright? He was supposed to be my friend. You could have found ANYONE else on this Earth but you picked him.” “It takes two.. wasn’t just me!” “Oh I know that sweetheart and trust me, I’ll ‘talk’ to him later but right now, he’s not the one standing in my kitchen, is he?” “Please, just listen,” she said, reaching out for his hand but he pulled away immediately like she was dangerous. “Don’t f*****g touch me,” he said with watery eyes. He needed to lash out before he started crying in front of her. “You’re a s**t, you know that?” Silence. “You just couldn’t keep your legs closed. So we’re finished here. Put some clothes on, pack your bags and get the f**k out because I don’t want to ever see you again, you got that? If he’s so special, he’s worth throwing away six years together then he can look after you from now on. I’m done trying.” © 2013 thehiddlethingsReviews
