Not Your Dream

Not Your Dream

A Poem by A. J. Kingsley
"

The poem that inspired "The Possession You Call Love". Once hidden in a journal, now it's here.

"
I used to think the moment you first saw me was the greatest moment of your life
but I know now how wrong I was.
I tried so hard to be who you wanted me to be
but every step along that road was like a dagger in my heart.
I can't love you, and love myself at the same time.
I spent so long trying to win your love
but with every impossible standard met
you gave me ten more to somehow follow.
I tried to do the impossible for you.
If you asked me to fly I would try and try even if I knew I couldn't do it
hoping my efforts would be enough
but it never is for you.
I am tired of killing who I am trying to please you.
I may not be your dream
but I won't let you ruin mine by crushing my soul
through the possession you call love.
I wish I didn't have to run from you
but staying would mean the death of who I am.
