The Floral WaltzA Story by The Floral WaltzA small scene that's set in a story I'm writing about finding the beauty in the small things :)
She was standing in the long grass staring at the horizon. I couldn’t quite guess if she was staring at the wreckage from the war or if she was in deep thought. I took a few tentative steps towards her hoping not to disturb her.
As I was a few steps away she smiled to herself and turned to face me. "It’s such a beautiful country, it’s a shame about the war." Her smile lessened as I laughed mockingly. "I find it to be quite ugly. The war wreckage everywhere you look, the soldiers staring at us and belittling us at every chance. Our lack of chances in the world now. Our country is ugly." I turned and surveyed the wreckage. "You’ve gotta look past that. Once you learn to look past the chaos and destruction that’s been thrown upon our country you can marvel at the beauty of it." I looked at her, not quite understanding what she meant. How could she find our war torn country where we’re kept as prisoners, beautiful? "Look at the horizon, it’s at that perfect time of sunset where the sun is a soft orange, but still able to throw it’s colour across the sky, giving us a view of the most beautiful pinks, oranges and blues. "Look at the flora around us. Look how the grass waltz with the flowers, the wind and trees singing their duet as their music. I stopped to marvel at each one. The horizon and it’s ever changing palette of soft colours. The waltzing flowers and grass. The singing duet of the trees and grass. She touched my arm. "Even though our country may look ugly, you've just gotta look for the small things that make it so beautiful." She tugged me down and we sat, smiling together, as we watched the sun finish its painting, the flowers and grass their dance and the trees and wind their song. And it was the most beautiful thing. © 2015 The Floral WaltzAuthor's Note
