Chapter 3

I woke up to the sound of a scream, not the kind of scream that you hear when you see a rock star, the kind of scream that you hear when something tragic has happened. I jumped out of my bed and ran down stairs to the kitchen where the noise had come from. I found my mother in my father’s arms, both of them sobbing. There were two police men standing in the doorway. I looked at them and got a pit in my stomach; it felt like I had swallowed a rock. “What’s wrong? Wh-what happened?” I searched the officers’ faces for answers but they only shook their heads slowly. I looked at the object one of the cops had in his hand. It was a necklace. The chain was silver and it had a lime green and black nautical star on it. It belonged to Ethan, I got it for his 16th birthday, and he wore it everyday. I looked up at the police. “Where is he?” I screamed and my mom cried even harder. I ran up to his room, taking the stairs two at a time. I threw open his door and looked on his bed, expecting to find him laying there but he wasn’t.

Ethan Parker, my big brother, the one who taught me to sled down the stairs with a mattress during the summer, the one who played dolls with me even though his friends were outside playing baseball, the one I told to go die, was dead. The cops were gone by the time I came back downstairs but my mother and father were in the same place they were when I left. I looked up at them “Where the hell is he?” My mother looked up at me and opened her mouth to speak but all that came out was another sob. My father stood up shakily and took me in his arms.
“Lexi,” he said using his old nickname for me “Ethan... he was in accident.”
“Well then we better get our asses to the hospital!” I said, looking at them as if they were idiots.
“No, he’s not at the hospital. He…Ethan died at the scene.”
No. I looked up at him my eyes filled with tears “No he’s not.” I said, angrily pushing my father away from me. “He’s not dead. He can’t be. He was healthy and strong. If you guys aren’t going to pick him up then I am.” I turned around and ran out the door heading towards the hospital, I could hear my mother scream my name from the kitchen but I just kept running because if I ran fast enough maybe Ethan would be in one of the beds at the hospital, if I ran fast enough reality couldn’t catch me.
