The Big Debate is back. It never dies.
The average man of the modern society is again faced with the False Choice - that between Big State and Big Corporate. I pity the gullible existence of this average man of the modern society, our Democracy. Time and again, he has been taken for a ride, first by Big State, then by Big Corporate, then by Big State again, and so on. Ironically, throughout his powerless existence - sometimes at the mercy of one, sometimes the other - he has been made to believe he's no less than a superhero - they call him the Democratic Man. Every four or five years, the Democratic Man comes out on the street, chest puffed out and head held high with the kind of pride often seen in men who are in control of their lives (and equally often in men who are not), and awards a Contract. The award of this all important Contract is a most profound act witnessed in our Democracy. The award of this all important Contract is also a most futile exercise conducted in our Democracy. If the Democratic Man exercises his False Choice to award the Contract to Big State, he loses freedom. If he awards the Contract to Big Corporate, he loses wealth. Somewhat cognizant of this lose-lose proposition, quite often he tries out awarding the Contract to a confusing (and confused) blend of Big State and Big Corporate, in which case our Democracy loses direction. The Big Dilemma is back. It never dies.
