The Whiskey Song

The Whiskey Song

A Poem by Jordan Bryant
"

Pantoum

"

I drink whiskey like water, singing songs older than me

While my aged soul drowns in my youth.

You never call me unless you need something

And I can’t distinguish your lies from the truth.

While my aged soul drowns in my youth,

My last cigarette burns to ash in my fingers

And I can’t distinguish your lies from the truth.

I once told a lie and it scorched my soul

My last cigarette burns to ash in my fingers

And you tell the same joke twice;

I told a lie once and it scorched my soul.

The bitter smoke from my lungs lingers

You tell the same damn joke twice.

Laughter erupts volcanically in your throat

where bitter smoke from my lungs lingers.

The whiskey water makes me sing.
