When You Were Mine

When You Were Mine

A Poem by Shannon Miller

When you were mine
The world was pure
The stars shone bright
And even the moon was warm

When you were mine
Life had meaning
The future held promise
And our joy was endless

When you were mine
Every day held peace
Every night held hope
And every moment was precious

Now that you’re gone
The world is empty
The stars are in hiding
And the sun has gone cold

Now that you’re gone
Life is mundane
The future a ghost
And sorrow is boundless

Now that you’re gone
Every day is restless
Every night holds despair
And every moment is hollow

If only you’d stayed
If only you’d fought
If only you’d chosen
To give me your all

We could have challenged
The mountains, the seas
Put demons to rest
And lived out our dreams

But you left me alone
No warning, no closure
Ended the heartbeat
We’d just started to share

This emotional poem reads like a rollercoaster; rising and falling between the hope and hopelessness of a love gone awry. Thank you for sharing..
