On Visiting New Orleans

On Visiting New Orleans

A Poem by BL McKinney

at breakfast for weeks, every channel was full

blown --distant-- disaster. my teenage rock

callous attitude as tangible as my OJ.

disease flew fanatical on t.v., but it was acai

extract in my drink that worried me. death

feeling routine, but high school excruciating.

gnawing nails now on Bourbon Street, I'm eager-stiff,

hellaciously 20, with too much alcohol to abuse.

instead, I just can't tear my eyes away from those stained,

Johnny Walker black lines. like a twenty foot high acidic

kiss, smeared on every building. they shout “death" and “tomb”

like the succinct calling card of a finally satiated inamorata.
