Our Lesson

Our Lesson

A Poem by Ryan M. James

As time again they come once more
Those long described as dogs of war
Settle the dust as boots they tread
Among the rubble and recent dead

Don't wipe that tear just let it fall
Among loved ones on Jordan's shore
A cry for every child gone
The Dead Sea red again once more

How many years and how many lives
How many sons, fathers, daughters and wives
How much death must we ordain
To resign blind faith in humanity's name

Within us each there is a call
A quite whisper to end all war
To lay down arms and join as one
To exhale peace and breathe in love

When will we learn each are the same
Regardless of to which god we pray
No god of mine or yours sustains
Killing in their holy names

So easily we each have forgot
The golden rule that each one taught
To love all life for the gift it is
To help our brothers and sisters live

To treat all beings with respect
To do to others what we expect
To be thankful each in our own way
To make this world better every new day

With trembling hands outstretch Your palm
Forgive and live and feel the calm
The world we dream of can be created
All it takes is love and the surrender of hatred
