Understanding

Understanding

A Poem by Ann A Myta
"

From the book Tales in the hood

"

You can never understand hurt, if you've never been in pain,

you can never understand sorrow, if you’ve never had to grief,

you can never understand happiness, if you've never been sad,

you can never understand love, if you've never had a broken heart,

you can never understand yourself, if you've never been alone,

you can never understand freedom, if you’ve never had it taken away,

you can never understand life, if you’ve never been a part of it,

but most of all, you can never understand the person sleeping next to you, if you’ve never been stabbed by their toenails.
