My Heart Spoke

My Heart Spoke

A Poem by Tessa Melendez

I looked him square in the face
as always,
Watching him as he joked.

My heart, once again, speared
on the corners of his smile,
The light in his hazel-y eyes,

That's when my heart spoke in a way...
I'd never heard before yesterday.
Pounding its fist on my ribs
with a new strength,
Crying out, "I love you!"
But there's nothing I can do.

I merely stared him in the eyes pointedly,
Pressing the thought toward him with an internal scream,
"I'm in love with you!"
But, he merely laughed at me looking at him,
And my heart once again went dim.

That's right,
He's moved on.
He can't read you like that anymore.

My first time falling in love,
The feelings are so late and wrong,
His are already gone.
Damage already done.

My first time in love,
And the feelings are useless.
They don't even matter.
Just as disappointing as all my others.

Author's Note

Tessa Melendez
This one is written on the topic: First time falling in love. It's based on the experience I had yesterday when I was at work joking with my old friend with benefits I've spoken of previously and I suddenly felt my heart speak to me and say that I was in love with him. It felt so different from other times I've been around him and I wanted to say something. But all I could do was stare him in the eyes and try in vain to tell him that I loved him via telepathy. He didn't seem to notice or care. He's moved on....

I think your author's note is redundant . . . not needed . . . your poem already says everything clearly & more artistically (tho I did enjoy the lively spirit of your authors note). I'm not into love poems or breakup poems becuz they're usually boring, predictable & whiny. This poem is the complete opposite of all that. This is how it's done. Take one small moment in time & blow it up with intense feeling & detail, then let that moment speak for the entire journey of letting go of someone & dealing with the leftover longing & regrets. This is what SHOW instead of tell is all about -- whereas your author's note is mostly telling (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I agree that readers can show a different interpretation. I've seen it happen.
