Lies

Lies

A Poem by Tessa Melendez

Why are lies so commonplace,
when we know that their presence isn't easy to erase?
Why do we surround ourselves with people we're afraid to trust?
Underestimating each other's fortitude
until we create our fortress of solitude.
Exiling ourselves for our own lack of good judgement.

Why do lies seem powerful in some eyes?
Creating pain in others' hearts,
Because now,
Every memory is filled with doubt.
That person has to wonder what else you may lie about,
What actions could be lies.

And just like that,
Future plans collapse.
That trust is gone.
Because you lacked trust yourself.
