Chapter five

I untangled my moist fingers from each other and wiped the cold sweat that trickled down my head with an already damp handkerchief.
This shouldn't be hard i thought, pacing back and forth in front of the door leading to the library. I had practiced everything i would say to her, i knew exactly how i would say it; i would ask casually like it wasn't a big deal.
I summmoned up a little courage turned the knob opening the door, she turned towards the door when she heard it open and smiled when she saw me.
"Hi Tayo"
"Hey Annie, Good evening How are you? "
I chastised myself mentally for greeting her so formally. "Good evening? I asked myself; 'you wanted to be casual and you already sound like an uncle' I thought
"you ok? " she asked "you seem to be lost in thought"
""no no, I - I'm ok" I stammered
I suddenly felt like a fool just standing in front of her.
I pulled out a chair and sat, thinking of what i would say, trying desperately to remember all the words i had practiced
"So, how was the football game?" she asked

"what football game?"

"The game you said you would be going to see earlier, Are you sure you're ok Tayo?"

"I'm fine" I replied
" The game didn't hold anymore, the goal keeper had an injury and they couldn't find anyone to replace him, so it was postponed"

"ooh alright, sorry about that"

"it's cool"

The awkward silence that followed hung on the air like a gaping void that needed to be filled by any sound; her voice or mine, the sound of someone opening the door or even loud bang.

"So" i said, finally breaking the silence

"There's the new cafe that just opened up and i wanted to try it out, so i was thinking maybe you'll be interested in checking it out . With me"

She had blank look on her face making it almost impossible to know what she was thinking, i held my breath for a few seconds wondering what thoughts were going through her mind.

"Sure, no probelm" she replied

I sat up, surprised she had agreed so quickly

"So tomorrow is a Saturday, is tomorrow ok?"

"Yea it is" She replied

I suddenly felt relaxed, like a weight has been lifted off of me

"so I'll see you around?"

She smiled and nodded.
Walking down the hallways i felt happiness flow through me, warming my skin like the rays of the early morning sun.

So, Tayo ashed you out on a date? Roseline asked

"it's not a date, it's just two friends hanging out that all"
She scoffed , looking at me with disapproval written in her face
"so what are you going to wear?
"something simple i guess, maybe jeans and a white top.
Her eyes grew eye, she stared at me like i had said something foreign and unacceptable
"you want to wear jeans and a top! On your first date!
' It's not a da" I started to say
" shut up!" she yelled
"It's a date, and I'm definitely choosing what you'll wear
And that ended the discussion.
