A Bridge to Cross

A Bridge to Cross

A Poem by Richard Williams
"

Nature's impending change.

"

Caterpillar...

as you ambulate along this log

you seem to sniff,

as if you were a furry nose.

I watch you in your hastened crawl

and think about the change to come,

when wings become a part of you

if you survive your winter sleep.

Woolly bear, what can equate

the novel coat you wear?

Now you have inched beneath the log

and I must go.  May providence

uphold your nap in cradle-song cocoon.

A stain of ice pervades the air

although the sky is blue.

(I'm glad I stopped along this road

to watch this creature in its world.)

Caterpillar, the winter solstice

may find you wrapped in warm embrace,

silently in bliss amid the snowy leaves,

awaiting delicate wings.

Worm-like little basset, apace

as larva go.  Will you find peace

within the snow?  Do you sense the magic

of your impending change?

Does autumn urge you on with thumb?

Perhaps you span the synergy of who

you are and what your ends decree.

I love the way the observation of the caterpillar leads to questions at the end, questions that in some ways we can ask ourselves. Beautiful!
