Rights Denied

Rights Denied

A Poem by Bob B

After years of limited access

To the voting booth,

We are now--once again--

Facing an ugly truth:

While laws making it easy to vote

Should be watertight,

Many Americans do not feel

That voting is a right.

There were the 13th, 14th, and 15th

Amendments. That is true.

But lawmakers STILL found ways to make

Voting hard to do.

Fifty-six years ago

We Americans saw

The Voting Rights Act being

Signed into law.

One would think that that would be

The end of the battle, but no:

Now lawmakers all around

The country are saying, "Whoa!

"We can't make it easy to vote.

NO WAY nohow!

People might vote for the other person,

And that we can't allow."

We must pass the necessary

Laws for voter protections.

If not, we'll have to say good-bye

To free and fair elections.

Bravo Sir, another truth well spoken in poetry. It's so strange that we can't seem to learn anything from our past in order to become a better diverse and fair society. We truly have deep seeded issues that need to be resolved. I wonder what could be the cause of such distrust, rage, and hatred? One that would seek to curb the rights of inner cities denizens to properly be given the same opportunity of rural America to vote. I can't seem to put my brown finger on exactly why this seems to be occurring. Especially during a time where law enforcement seems to be incapable of treating all citizens equitably under the law in their rights to live. Because I'm sure we as a civilized society can agree misdemeanors should never cause the death of anyone. Perhaps some are only devout originalists of the constitution who believe certain people are just 3 fifths of a human being thus their vote should be represented to reflect that. It's a dark road we find ourselves on as a Country and it appears to only be getting worse.
