Explaination Please

Explaining our use of a word to someone who doesn't understand our meaning.

In this world there is so much diversity in language it is sometimes hard to explain the meaning of a word or phrase to someone who has not grown up speaking or reading that language. They may be familiar with a more formal way of using the language of a country they have immigrated to but local lingo ends up confusing them. They will say “please explain what you mean by that as I do not understand that use of the word.”  Whatever the term is we have used it all our lives and we know what we mean but when it comes to explaining that meaning we may realize it is not that easy to explain. We may have to take a few moments to think about our explanation before we give it. What a wonderful challenge for our brains to find the definition we need and to make us realize just how hard it is for someone else to understand especially when we use slang instead of proper grammar. What a fun way to learn new things about our language and that of other countries; explaining, exchanging ideas until all parties are satisfied that each understands the meaning of what has been said.  Please feel free to share, if you are so inspired.
