A Tale of Cards

A Tale of Cards

A Poem by Trevor Jay Bloodworth

No one knows what made her do what she did,

She looked around, and made her final bid.

The cards were shuffled, this was the last deck.

If she wasn't careful, it’d be her neck.

She had to win for the money, you see.

She was in great debt, wouldn't you agree?

Onward she went, knowing what must be done.

The cards went out, the last hand had begun.

Winning was all that mattered to her now,

She had to hide the sweat on her eyebrow.

But how did it come to this game of chance?

It was all normal you see, at first glance.

She was lucky, you have to understand.

She could use her luck almost on command.

“Lady Luck”, they had often said was she.

Losing this game would cost quite a great fee.

Not a normal person, far from it, friend.

She was “gifted”, they would often commend.

Never once did she ever seem to frown.

That’s because her luck, never let her down.

It was true, she was born to be lucky.

But the people here were gross and mucky.

Large men, who favored the game of high chance.

Seizing the moment, they began the dance.

Cards were on the table, it was her time.

To beat them was at odds, a heavy crime.

Still, she could not lose, such was Lady Luck.

She set her cards down, and knew it was struck.

“Cheater!” They called out to our dear lady.

“You’ll die! This is not luck, this is shady!”

She knew it was time for her to take leave.

But this game is not what you will perceive.

He took out his gun and shot through her heart.

It struck her and pierced her skin like a dart.

Gone, the lady had fallen over dead.

“To the hospital!” another man said.

No more debt did she owe to these dark men.

But to kill Lady Luck is such a sin.

Never will she die, she has such great might.

You can’t kill her; her heart is on the right.

I really like this. The rhyme is great and flows smoothly. The story told was fun with a twisty end. I also love to gamble so it hit a chord with me :) Nicely done.

Thank you, much appreciated.
Oh, a terrific story with such wonderful rhyme!! Lady Luck had quite the game.......lol The build up to the end line is so well done!!
Now, I can see why you liked my poem of The Butterfly of Green as you write much the same.

Oh wow.. I love the humor of the poem. The last line cracks me up.
I must admit I love the rhyme and the tone of this poem.
I could feel the tension at the beginning and I could feel the eyes staring as she went to lay down her cards.
You must take great joy in writing these because I can almost see the smile behind this one and the other I just read.
Thank you!

You have such a great personality. Keep writing and I will keep reading promise. :)
I really, genuinely love this.
And I must admit, the twist of her heart being on the right is brilliant.
After reading this and your other poem, I think you're pretty darn talented, man.
