Too Late for Goodbyes

Too Late for Goodbyes

A Poem by J. M. Yeary

Seven years ago, while she lay asleep

He packed his things and turned to leave
He never said I'm sorry or stayed to see her cry
He just left her with no last goodbye

Seven years went by, and he never did write
Just a lonely phone call one hot August night
He didn't say how are you or I hope everything is all right
He just talked about the weather, but left no goodbye

Three years later, standing in the rain
He thinks about the woman, and all the pain
He wished he had said I am sorry or stayed to see her cry
To help her understand all the reasons why

But the caretaker is calling it's time to leave
The gates are closing no more time to grieve
He'd give anything for one more try
But the woman, chiseled in stone, won't hear his goodbye

I like how this moves along and the lesson. Appreciating things when
we no longer have them is one of the most painful life lessons.
thank you for sharing the poem.

Touching and filled with emotion. Although I don't usually go in for rhyming verse this works very well.

After rereading this work I can feel the pain in the author.

Nicely done.

Feels like a very somber....painful private piece. I like this one !!!so sad....consistant rhyme pattern. There is something so wonderful about an open honest work. The gate closing really puts punch in the emotion.Micah 7:19 ( Micah was a prophet )19 Once again you will have compassion on us.You will trample our guilt under your feetand throw them into the depths of the ocean!God forgives us like that !!!!! Don't pull stuff back outta that sea !!!Blessssssssssssssssssssss

This was so in rhyme......and I felt well while reading it....
so what is the moral of this story? Think about it, what you
need and don't desire what you can't get and better a
sparrow in the hand than a dove on the tree. (Besser ein
Spatz in der Hand als die Taube auf dem Dach - says german
quote)

a great poem. yes. I d like to know, if he became love sick.

Loved this.....so sad in the way he treated her, only to lose her in death......lesson learnt for him.
Beautifully written, great flow.............

But the caretaker is calling it's time to leave
The gates are closing no more time to grieve
He'd give anything for one more try
But the woman, chiseled in stone, won't hear his goodbye

I think this is my new favorite - it has a lonely feeling about it...very moving and heartbreaking...it is also a great reminder.

About
I discovered this poem while I was looking through an old cemetery book at the courthouse in Crowell, Texas--a very good depiction of what most of us feel as we venture through life. Surely (at least .. more..
