The Dark Side of Safety

The Dark Side of Safety

"

Our release onto the streets again.

"

I wake up in the middle of the night to a whimpering, it sounds like someone is trying to cry, but is having a pillow stuffed in their face, and I sounds female...and close. I quietly reach and grab my light, and my hatchet. I click on my light and see two men over Kayla with their pants down, and the whimpering is coming from her, so without a second thought I run up to the first one and plant the hatchet in the back of his head to hard, the entire head of the ax is gone. I yank back, and pull it out of his head, with a sick sucking noise it comes out. as this happens, Kayla looks up at me and pulls her dress down, and start to pull her sheets over her, I turn to the second man, he is on the ground, he must have tried to run with his pants at his ankles, I jump on him and bring the hatchet down on his chest, arms, legs, he lets out a yell that turns to a moan, that stops as he passes out, but I don't stop, after a second or two after her passes out, I feel hands grab me, so I turn and get ready to swing when I hear a familiar voice.

"Stop" says Kyle in a calm, even, voice, and I drop the hatchet, and turn to Kayla.

"Honey, they are dead, they can't hurt you." Kyle throws me a towel and I wipe the blood off me, and then I crawl into Kayla’s bed and she immediately latches onto me, and cries into my chest, all the time saying they got in, and other things, barely audible over the sobs.

"After ten minutes Kyle garbs my shoulder.”We need to go, someone will notice two missing guards soon I’ll watch out side, be quick."

"After a minute I tell Kayla what Kyle said, and she agrees. Kyle, the gentleman that he is steps outside as a lady needs to dress herself, I throw on a pair of pants and fallow him.

"Don't go." Kayla manages to whisper

"Ok, I’ll be right here. I get dressed in my camouflage and grab everything I came in with, my Assault Rifle, , I grabbed my webbing with the katana, tomahawk and the ka-bar, I grab the sniper rifle A.K.A the Remington 280, and my side arm the 1911 and the .357 magnum, the silenced .45, and finally my 12 gauge shotgun, my Remington 870 express. After I get all suited up, I turn to see Kayla is all ready, but had nothing to defend her with.

"Here, take this pistol." I hand her the .357. "You know how to shoot."

  "Ha-ha, trained by the best."

"Ya, you are a pretty deadly shot, and take this shotgun, you got 5 shots in it." I walk over to the bowl, and grab the emergence smokes. I nod, and she nods back.

"Here we go." we step out of the tent to see Kyle chilling outside about to light a smoke, I pull one out f the pack, I stick my pack into my pocket, just to have a hand steal them back out, I look over to see Kayla pull a cigarette out and put it to her lips.

"Might as well, our lives are already cut short." I smile and pull out a lighter spark my smoke and then spark Kayla’s up. We stand there a minute getting adjusted to the dark of night; there wasn't even a little light over the horizon. After a minute of smoking, we head to the south east, as this is where the entrance is. There is a beaten down trail that we walk down. I stop about 2 minutes in.

"Kyle. Remember what we were going to liberate, here it where it is stored." Kyle gets this really devious smile on his face.

  "What are you to thinking?"

  "Survival." Kyle says.

Next to us was a bunker, half buried and made of sand bags.

"Let’s do it." I pull out the silenced gun Kyle gave me. We walk around the bunker and find the entrance guarded by one tired and sleeping guard. I walk up to the guard and I put my arm around his throat from the back and lock my hand into the inside of my elbow of my other hand, and put the palm of my hand onto the back of his head and I put some strength into it

"Shhhhhh, quit fighting, I’m not going to kill you, just need you to not wake up half way through." the guard is fighting with all of his strength, but there is no way out of this once it is locked in and the person is standing correctly, and after a minute he stops fighting, and I keep him locked for an additional ten seconds. "We got a few minutes before he starts to wake up." inside we find heaven, I walk over to the racks, there are assault rifles, light machine guns, you name it, it is in here. "No light machine guns, too heavy, burns through far too much ammo, try to stick to assault rifles, snipers, pistols, guns that don't burn a lot of ammo. I see a case on the floor and open it to find grenades and claymores, I look around and find a back pack, I load about 5 grenades and 5 claymores, then I look on the shelf’s, and fall in love. There is a cross bow with what looks like a scope, o grab it and hold it up, night vision scope. "Look for night vision binoculars." I look over and see Kyle hand cuffing the guard to a case that looks like it weights a thousand pounds. We keep looking, and we all grab boxes of ammo and a bunch of assault rifles we all fill our back packs with stuff we see that we like, and at the end of our shopping time we step out and continue our heading south east. Giggling all the way.

"We need a way to get far away from here."

"I remember seeing sand rails around here somewhere."

  "A what?"

  "Dune buggy on steroids."

"Lets go!" we walk around and see humvees, too wide to get through the streets. In another part we see about a dozen sand rails.

"One each, we will need the passenger seat for our supplies." we walk up to the machines, they are pretty much a roll cage with an engine, really good suspension, a push bar, and a seat belt, not much else.

"Once we start them, we have to tear out of here, I’ll go first then Stephen, then Kayla." we nod in approval. "Don't forget to turn the fuel on and choke it." We do as instructed and yank the rip cord as hard as we can, the engines purr to life before the engine has enough time to pull the rip cord into the starter again, we are pushing it in the clutch and dropping it into gear. Kyle gets off the line first, squealing his tires. After a second, I lift my foot off the clutch and stomp the gas, and the four wheels break free of the ground and leave a nice black spot on the ground, but they quickly get traction and whip me forward. I turn my head real quick to see Kayla right behind me. Kyle takes a quick right and we are looking at the chain link fence, Kyle stomps the gas and drops it into another gear and he starts to pull away from us, I fallow suit to pull up along side of him, so there is less chance of it stopping us. when we hit that fence, our plan goes all to hell, we are flipping and spinning, I curl up in a ball around my seat belt, I think that we are dead, we had to be going fifty or sixty miles an hour when we hit, after a minute I stop, and I hear two sets of legs run up I pull out my pistol and in my dazed funk, I see Kyle limp over, an Kayla running over,

  "Holy s**t are you ok"

"Ya, I think, flip me upright. the do as I ask, my engine is still running, and it looks like it is just cosmetic damage, my stuff is still buckled in "Lets get going, talk later" we again put it in gear, but this time, there is shooting, the guards must have wised up after we broke the fence. After a minute or two and a few turns, we are heading into town, towards the garage Kyle used to work at. After about 20 minutes of racing through the streets, we arrive there I pull my gun and watch around for zombies, nothing. He pulls out his keys, and opens a little person sized door, then he opens a huge bay door, I hop in my truck and pull it into the garage and shut it off, with Kayla behind me. I run back out and drive his in too. The door shuts behind us; he locks the door with a large I beam. Immediately we are searching the place, looking for undead, and find nothing. After a few we sit and rest.

"That was one hell of a crash."

"Ya, I think I fucked my back up, I need a chair with a back on it to throw it back in, but other than that I’m fine, together I guess seat belts do save lives, I always laughed at that sticker on my truck." we sit in silence for a minute. "I was some sheet metal here; we should at some protection onto these rides, a half door, something to protect the engine, and some body panels, keep it all removable of course."

"Ya, that will be something to think about tomorrow, ya, this building is safe, sixteen inch concrete, it goes up six feet, then goes to stainless steel siding, we are safe, loud as hell when it rains, but safe."

"See you in the morning then." I lean over to Kayla, and give her a kiss, and Kyle throws sleeping bags at us.

"Had to sleep here when the flood hit last spring." I get into my sleeping bag and get undressed as that is the only way I can sleep. About 20 minutes later Kayla is crawling in.

"Want me to throw on boxers?"

"No, you’re good; I just didn't want to sleep alone."

"You’ll be ok" I put my arms around her and give her a kiss. A minute later we are both sleeping like babies
