D-Day

D-Day

A Chapter by Stephen

It started like any other boring day in my senior year. Wake up, shower, drive to school, have a smoke while driving, do school work. But that was the day that it all changed.

I was driving listening to 97.7, good old country music, when the news came on like usual at 7:05 with Jimmy and Shelly. they were talking about the news, how the protest about the amount of money being made by investors turned into riots. they said that the police had shot and killed 15 protesters, then they had people call in and say if they should have been allowed to shoot the protesters. the first few said that the police were suppose to protect us, not kill us. Then a man came on and said that if their lives were being endangered it turns to self defense and he'll be damned if he hears about cops being killed because of some political bull-s**t like this.

that interview ends at about the time I throw my smoke out the window and pull into my parking spot. I get out say hi to the people i always see, and i go to my usual morning hang out. There i strike up a conversation with the always funny Johnny. he heard about the same protest turned riot and we are debating it, even though we are on the same side, thinking that the cops did the right thing. He sees his girlfriend Trisha, and it is funny how her towers over her, she comes up to about his mid-chest, they both had red hair, but johnny has brown eyes, Trisha has brownish yellow eyes, a rare combo.

The bell rings ad we are off to out first block classes, for me it is a mind grueling study hall. about 20 minutes in and i'm sleeping like a baby until Liz decided to wake me up, she is on her computer and wants me to look at this article, i guess the riots are growing in size and they are marching in all directions. cops are trying to contain them because they have started to yell at pedestrians and attack them. Then the second bell rings, i walk through the hallway to ancient studies with Mr. Conroy, we always joke around that he is gay because he always has a watch on his wrist that is comparable with a wall clock in size, and if you listened to him, he sounded it. But he has a wife and two kids. That class drags by like a one-legged man trying to pull a Boeing 747 using his hair. the only things that make it go by a little faster is my buddy Connor and Nick sitting next to me. Connor is a kid who tries to act ghetto, but is a really nice guy, we've been friends for going on 5 or 6 years now, nick I've known since second grade, he is a bigger guy than Connor but he is more laid back than Connor. but after that class ends we three go to lunch.

we sit at the same table every day, Johnny and Trisha join us and we talk about everything, girls, sex, cars, hunting, four-wheeling, everything. We have a running pool going this week, who ever can make Trisha turn the brightest red by what we say wins free lunch for the next week. And man are we trying hard, but sh isn't turning any colors. When we are almost done eating, we hear the announcement chimes go off, and out principle gets on the mic.

"we are having a lock down. This is not a drill. Code black"

We all look to each other

" Where do we f*****g go?" i ask because in one of these drills you are suppose to hide from the windows, but all the jocks ran to the only spot you can't see from the windows.

"F**k it" johnny says as he goes back to eating his lunch.

i reach down to my boot, i check inside of it to see if i remembered to put my knife there.I did. it is a little neck knife they call it. But i keep it razor sharp, i have used it before to field dress squirrels after i shot them, and this little thing cuts right through their tough hide. then i peer out the window just in time to see a man hobbling through the hall way with a protest wall street sign. he looks right at me then moans and starts this way. I'm not that worried because these doors auto lock in a code black, and this windows are bullet proof.

He gets to the window and looks at me. this eyes are weird, i don't know how to explain it but there is something in them, like a tick. the he starts shoving the door and the f****n thing opens, with a snap, and I'm thrown back. i instinctively grab my knife out of my boot. by the time i get almost up, johnny has tackled thing and is punching it, i run over and slit this thing throat with my knife, but nothing comes out. so i try again, still nothing, as this time johnny has to have broken this thing nose twenty times over but nothing happens. johnny is them thrown by this thing. Connor then works up the balls to run over. he grabs the things head and tries to snap it, no luck

"let me try" i say, I'm a lot stronger, Connor then sits on it's chest and i plant my feet on its shoulder and grab it by its lower jaw and pull the head away from it's body and to the right as i hear a snap, it's body goes limp, it's head is still trying to bite us.

"Ghetto stomp contest anyone?" i yell and i start stomping it head in, Connor joins in and so does nick until i grab my knife, put it where the temple is and stomp the thing.

"What the f**k was that?" Nick panted

  "I don't know." as I take a seat

At about that time the police start to show up and they sweep the school as teachers give us directions. They tell us that no seniors will be allowed to drive home, and that we all have to ride our bus home.

  "Bullshit" I mumble

" Your gonna make a run to the parkinglot?" Connor asks

"Ya, i don't even know what bus is mine, they won't be able to stop me, I'll tell them to stuff it" i say jokingly, "want a ride?"

they all live around me, and I give them rides all the time anyways "sure" Connor, Johnny, and Trisha all reply simotaniously "Let's go" "
