The Story of Helen

The story of the Trojan War is one we all know,

The battle that lasted  for ten years or so.

Between the greeks and the trojans, the battle waged,

Neither backing down, refusing to be caged.

But do you know the story behind the war?

The force that caused all of this gore.

It really is simple, when you look at it now,

A woman caused the war, you may be wondering  how?

Her name was Helen, a daughter of Zeus,

Beauty unrivaled, no man could refuse.

Her husband made a decree that was passed,

That no man, but he himself, would be her first and her last.

Now her part begins when three goddesses showed themselves,

To the Prince of Troy, Paris, who they wanted for themselves.

Paris chose Aphrodite, for she swore to him,

That he could pick the most beautiful woman, and she would follow his whim.

He traveled to Sparta where he laid his eyes on Helen,

Demanded she be his wife, not knowing it would make him a felon.

She soon fell victim to Aphrodite’s spell,

Escaping with Paris, thinking all would be well.

Her husband beyond angered, declared bloody war,

Gathering 1000 ships he sailed towards death’s door.

For nine years they fought with neither side giving an inch,

Until they decided on one last battle, both sides thinking that they would win this clinch

Helen was the judge, deciding with whom she would go,

And her husband came out victorious, surrounded by a happy glow.

Despite losing the war, Paris still escaped,

With the help of Aphrodite he became a cloud, one with the landscape.

And here ends the story that the young woman had,

But don’t leave yet and don’t be sad,

For we see her once again, the queen of sparta,

Standing true by her husband and waiting with him for Telemachus to show
