Five Years Old

Five Years Old

A Poem by Sunflower

Five years old,

Not doing what is told,

Trying to have fun,

When there is no sun,

Swing on a tire,

Or roast marshmallows by the fire,

Laugh at the bugs,

Or give cherish-able hugs,

Smile a crooked smile,

Or take a nap for a little while,

Either way imagination is her key,

She listens to the constant screams,

Pretending it isn’t happening,

Mommy yells in the other room,

Daddy just pops in more chew,

The dog is barking nonstop,

Why won’t someone call the cops?

Mommy is hitting dad,

Dad is getting really mad,

Did they forget all about her,

Or did they finally realize how they don’t care?

Suddenly it gets quiet,

Just so quiet,

The little girl peaks from under her bed,

There stands her mom with the unsaid.
