Memories of Ace

Memories of Ace

A Poem by Tarry Franck

You were the kid
We could never have
The love of our lives
And now we're so sad,
Your departure we knew
Was going to come
But never, never this soon,
We remember when you were just a pup
And Daddy could carry you
Around in his pocket
But that didn't last very long
Because so fast you grew up,
We taught you so many things
How to balance a treat
On your nose
Stay steady and until we told you so,
Pop it up and then chew it
Then we graduated to a ball
Your obsession with them
And socks were so unreal
Sometimes we would have to hide
Just to keep you calm at times
That was the deal,
I recall one evening
Us going to a casino
When we were done playing
We went to a restaurant
And I had a strange feeling,
I asked Daddy
If we could just go home
Of course we headed that way
When we walked through the door
The pot of food I left on the stove
However was still there
But it was empty
And the burner was on low
And the spoon was in the middle of the floor,
With such an innocent look on that face
We could not help
But extend such love
For then we realized
You were smarter than we
Had given you credit for,
And the talent began to grow
We had moved to another location
And there was not a refrigerator
So the great brother that I have
Gave us a tiny one to cool our things in
I came home one day and all the ham
And cheese packages were scattered
All over the kitchen,
Hmmm I wondered who it could have been
We had to duct tape the door
So you were unable
To open from the floor,
I remember all the times
We held you tightly
Through your epileptic seizures
And you would cry
And we cried along with you
Baby you were so smart
And we dearly miss you
In the end we know you went blind
And the epileptic seizures were hard
For all to endure,
But sweetie we're so glad you didn't
Pass away in the elements
You passed in a loving home
I regret that Daddy and I could not be there
For us to hold you through it all
But we know you are in heaven
And your mom accepted you
With open paws.

yes, i remember many scenarios like these with my pets, and when they misbehaved like bad children i spanked them like bad children and they learned not to "help themselves" to my stuff, even though they were smart enough to do it. i suffered with them when they suffered, because i dearly loved them as family members. now, i am reluctant to have a pet because they simply don't live long enough not to break your heart. this write brought all those memories crashing back to me like a ton of bricks from an old attic....well done.

In no way was this "screwed up"! Funny how we can connect with creatures who can't speak a word. Perhaps because of their eternal liveliness and loyalty. Like any person, their memories last a lifetime. Quite brilliant Tarry.

Your welcome
Oh, what sadness and pain this poem has struck my heart. I remembered thosefeelings when I've had my labrador and he died of cardiac failure. I shouldn't have fed him with so much food, thinking that fat dogs are cute. Anyway, this poem has reached out to me and I can feel your sentiments flowing on this one. Very detailed and vivid imagery from a painful situation. I hope your pup will be peaceful above. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you my dear friend Frieda
Our pets become a part of the fabric of our lives even more than human family at times. I am touched by your poem and the joy and suffering that you disclosed here.
