On March 4, at 12pm PT, the expansive and excellent free-to-play action-RPG Path of Exile will receive its fourth major expansion: Ascendancy.

The highlight of this xpac is The Lord's Labyrinth, a maze of traps and terrors generated fresh everyday. Die once in the labyrinth's bowels and you'll have to start over, upping the stakes in an already challenging game. Riddling the labyrinth is a series of boss fights with one Emperor Izaro which, intriguingly, promise to evolve based on your actions in previous bouts.

In addition, 19 Ascendancy classes (no half measures, right?) add branches to the massive skill tree, one class unlocked upon each completion of the labyrinth. Andy took a look at the Berserker build last month.

All in all, Ascendancy aims to demand more brainpower and nimble fingerwork than we've become accustomed to from the dungeon crawling genre POE divine orbs .

Path of Exile's latest expansion is out now, and completely changes the way that the ARPG's endgame works. It adds 32 new maps to battle through, each of which has a boss at the end, as well as four powerful Elder Guardians that you'll have to defeat before you reach the new bid bad: the Elder.

Before the update you fought through randomly generated maps to reach the Shaper, a Cthulhu-looking boss. Now, the Shaper and the Elder are at war, trying to separately spread their taint across the map. These taints affect the way maps look and feel: the Elder's minions will literally suck the colour out of the world, weakening your character if they're nearby, for example.
