Ugly duckling

By Tamyara Brown

She thought she was an ugly duckling, locked in a room called self-hate. She was mad at herself because she didn't have Beyonce's beauty and complexion, Mary J's voice and Janet's smile. Living in other people's image instead of creating her own. Close off to the world cause she drowning in her own misery. Afraid to open the window to smell the fresh air so the funk of self doubt lingers in the air. Won't open the curtains because the ray of sunshine might give her hope.

If she looked in the mirror she'd see she was a beautiful swan. To numb the pain she plan her departure of life before arriving. She looked at her imperfection and limited her thinking. Hopes been washed away by cruel voices in her head. She allow people to control her emotions instead of controlling her own. Her thoughts filled with her everyone's else opinions  causing her to be blindfold by her own sight of self. Hoping one day she take it off and see she's  in the process of becoming a beautiful swan.  Maybe one day she'll open her windows, raise her curtains and let the sunshine in. Until then she'll continue to be a ugly duckling.
