Chapter 8: What the-

A Chapter by Taig Ferrier
"

"Oh my. I didn't expect that to happen."

"

I groaned. "This isn't working!"

I yelled into the air. I'd killed about 30 assassins, wounded at least 20, and knocked out about 13. I was in bad shape, but more just kept coming. I knew I was going to die. I need to give them time, I told myself, and that renewed my energy once more. I set off again, kicking, shooting, slicing, causing explosions, and sowing chaos. I had stolen one of the comm systems off of a dead assassin, and was spouting gibberish into it.

They were going crazy, but I was still losing. What do I do… I thought to myself. I couldn’t keep it up much longer. Smoke must have gotten into my lungs. My head pulsed. My legs still grew heavier. I felt the heat in my chest spreading. It was like nothing I had ever felt before. It didn’t feel debilitating anymore, though. It felt… Strong. Then, i heard a voice in my head. It was an unfamiliar, british voice. “Hullo.” It greeted me.

“What the-” I got distracted long enough for an assassin to lunge at me. I barely managed to dodge, the dagger cutting a gash into my hip. It was one of many. I heard the voice again.

“You can do it, chap!”  It encouraged me. I ignored it, slamming my knee into the assassin’s stomach and my elbow into the back of his neck. I was breathing hard.

“Just let loose.”

I shook my head. Hallucinations were not a good sign. There were still at least three dozen assassins. I needed to focus. I charged into them, doing my best to dodge their attacks and counter, but my body was becoming slow.

“You should really listen to me.”

“Shut up!” I shouted to myself as my katanas broke. I grabbed an assassin by the head, reeling back my arm and slamming my metal hand into his face, sending him flying. As I did, another one caught me from behind, wrapping his arms around my neck. I clawed at his arm, but was too weak to wrench it away. A sword finally found its way into my stomach. I screamed in pain, spitting out blood. I kicked the assassin away from his sword, ripped it out, and thrusted it over my shoulder, into someone’s head. I fell to the ground, rapidly growing weak as my blood pooled around me.

“Not… Yet…” I groaned, struggling back up to my feet. Another assassin charged at me, but I jammed my fist into his stomach, ripping out his intestines and plunging the fingers of my other hand into his eyes, throwing him aside. A bullet ripped through my shoulder. One of them must have found my pistol. My arm hung limp at my side.

Sh*t...

“Let it go…”

What the f*ck are you talking about…

“You can feel it, can’t you?”

I feel… heavy…

I sunk down to my knees again, as if the earth itself were pulling me down. I couldn’t move my legs anymore. The assassins started to circle around me. My hands sprung out in front of me to stop me from falling face down in the puddle of water in front of me. I lifted my hand slowly.

Oh… It’s blood…

“Use it.”

I didn’t understand. My hand trembled. I needed to keep going. If any of them were left alive, they’d go after Izzy and Alex. I felt my veins pulsing as the blood drained out. I looked down to my stomach. The blood wasn’t draining out.

It was flowing into me. The crimson liquid that soaked the ground around me was flowing up my legs and into every gap in my body.

What…

“There you go, chap.”

My whole body was trembling. I felt strong. I didn’t know why. My body started moving on my own. My hands raised above my head, crossed over each other, palms open. The assassins took that as a surrender, closing in.

My hands closed into fist, quickly swinging down to my sides. I let out a blood-curdling scream; not in my own voice. The sky burst into a storm above me. Electricity sparked across the battlefield. The ground erupted beneath my feet, spikes of rock and soil impaling the assassins, who had no chance to escape. Then, as quickly as it happened, it was done. Dozens of assassins surrounded me, impaled on earthen spires. Others lied charred on the ground, the electricity having fried their body.

I looked around at the carnage, breathing heavily. The scent of blood was the only sensation reaching my brain. It was all around me.

“What… The f*ck…” I breathed out to myself. My eyes rolled back into my head, and I fell limp to the floor. I heard my heart beating very faintly.

“Oh my. I didn’t expect that.”

I didn’t answer. I just listened my my heart beat slower.

Then, it stopped.
