Episode Twelve

A Chapter by Tabitha t

I quickly ran along the tree line to try to get closer to the proceedings. As I pushed through thorns and small seedlings I felt panic set in. Brian was now surrounded by large hulking beast as they watched him standing there with interest. The two slaves that kept a hold of Brian’s elbows guided him around in a circle as if they were showing of merchandise to a group of wealthy costumers. Demons on all sides of the circle grunted and growled to each other. Large scaled and horned knuckled flew into the air waving objects for the large demon that stood in the middle of the circle and who was obviously in charge of the auction.

I was now maybe ten yards from the group in a low cover of bushes. The tree line was much thinner in this area and I knew I had a very high chance of being spotted here but I had to get close. I had to figure out how to get Brian out of this mess. My mind went back to the broken down slave I had seen. How he was shoved down to the ground by the monster. How terrified he looked as he quickly fled the street. I thought back to everything I had known about slaves on earth and I knew that this was very much the same thing. The only difference was; instead of white men ruling the land of cotton you had the Devil’s Army ruling hell.

Quickly the crowd shouted louder, the noise of bellowing and snarling reminded me of wild animals as they fought over the scraps of meat from a fresh killed carcass. One of the demons in the first row of patrons gave a loud bellow and the rest grew silent. He quickly walked over to the larger demon inside the circle and handed him a small black bag and turned towards the rest of the group behind him. He thrust one massive arm into the air and shouted triumphantly as he grabbed the chains that were around Brian’s wrists.

The group let a low growl ripple through them and they parted and the demon lurched through the crowd with Brian in tow. His arms were tightly bent upwards as he was much shorter then his new owner. He tripped and was dragged through the last few remaining on lookers before he regained his step and had to take to steps to each of the demon’s one.

They were now heading down a side street directly across from where I was hidden. If I didn’t follow now I would lose sight of them and any chance of freeing Brian. I looked to each side of the street as I looked for any opening where I could slip through the crowded streets unnoticed. Most of the passerbys were busily watching the scene on the platform as the two slaves dragged another captive from the cart and showed her off to the crowd. This woman was in worse shape then most. Her bones stuck out from her face and her hair was almost completely scorched to the scalp. I looked back at Brian as he tripped again as was dragged forwards, his toes barely touching the hot street underneath. They were coming to a corner, I had to go now or lose the opportunity. With one last breath I crept from the brush and looked around. No one turned to look at me. No one shouted and no chains thrown against me.

As I raced across the street and down the side ally that Brian had been taken down I realized that I looked just like any other of those men who wore rags and were covered in filth as they rushed around the city trying to not get in the way of the monsters who were twice their size. My already raw feet blistered as I ran as fast as my weak legs would allow as Brian disappeared from my view as he was dragged around the corner of the narrow alley.

I looked like any other slave.  I thought madly as I skidded around the corner, and for the briefest of moments I almost laughed at how thankful I was for that.

Good chapter, but eventually you've got to get them somewhere. I can understand his forgetting his wife, at least somewhat. He has a lot of problems right now.

I agree with Craig, I'm worried he's losing himself in his attempt to help Brian. I mean it's a great thing to do and it really shows his charactor... but I hope he doesnt give up on her even.if I am scared she cheated on him. I also love (unless I read wrong) that Brian is an Aussie.

I think it's good so far. Unique. But it's starting to bother me that he seems to have forgotten about searching for his wife. I understand that he's trying to help Brian and that's okay, but you might have him think about her more or even struggle with the moral dilemma of abandoning his new friend or postponing his search for her so he can help him.

Just my thoughts.
