Epilogue

risha sighed as she rests her head on Lance’s shoulder. She ran a hand through Emmy’s soft hair as they all lay in the soft bed together. Trisha’s mind kept going back to the rest of that long night. She and Lance had made it back to the cabin quickly to find Emmy and Justin asleep in the small cabin bed together. Lance had silently picked up the child and carried her out to the only running vehicle in front of the cabin, James’s shiny sports car. They had driven back to town slowly as Trisha explained everything that she had originally opted to never tell Lance.

It felt wonderful to finally come clean to the one man who had ever treated her with respect. She was afraid of what might happen once she went back to her house, for all she knew Lance would drop her off and speed away to never want to speak to her again. As they pulled into her gravel driveway Lance put the car into park and gently dropped his hand to rest on her knee. He looked over at her and her heart hammered in her chest.

This is it. She thought He is going to tell me to get out and he will drive away.

“I have to take care of one last thing,” he said gently but squeezed her knees just a bit tighter. “I promise to come back though. The tightness in her chest gave way slightly and she nodded before getting out of the car. She opened the back seat and picked up the sleeping Emmy as Justin yawned and hopped out of the backseat to follow his small master inside. Trisha looked back only once to see Lance drive away. Trisha put Emmy in bed and went back down stairs to make a cup of coffee and sit down at the kitchen table.

She stared at the mist rising from the hot black liquid and sighed deeply. She was exhausted but she couldn’t give up on Lance returning just yet. A small ray of hope still lived in her that he was different from the rest of them. Her body tingled as she heard the front door creak open. For the slightest second she envisioned James walking into the kitchen with the same dark smile on his lips, but when she saw Lance her eyes watered with relief.

“I told you I was coming back.” He smiled at her before opening his arms for her to fall into. “I had to get rid of the car. Such a waste of a nice ride, but we had to.” He smiles before looking down at her. His eyebrows burrowed together as he took in the dark circles under her eyes.

“Let me put you to bed.” He offered as he directed her upstairs. She didn’t complain as she barely stifled a yawn. Once at the top of the stairs she paused.

“Hold on a second.” She whispered as she pulled away to open Emmy’s bedroom door. She gently stepped to the bed before picking up the child and taking her back into the hallway. Lance smiled and opened the door for her. He tucked them both into the bed and turned to leave the room.

“Please stay.” She whispered to him. She didn’t want him to leave. She needed to find out what he was thinking. She needed to hear from him that he understood why she did what she had to. Lance said nothing but his eyes were gentle as he quietly lay down beside her. Trisha curled up on the side of him and rests her head on his shoulder.

“I don’t blame you.” He said after a few moments of silence, “At first I wanted to, badly. Then I started to think about Emmy and what I would do to protect her. I realized on the drive back here that I would do exactly what you did. You did what you thought was the only thing you could do to protect her, just like I did the only thing I could do to protect you.” He said as he thought out loud.

Duncan wasn’t going to let you go. He would have been there the rest of your life, hanging over your head, just like your father was until your mother did what she had to in order to protect you.” He sighed then, a tired wisdom in his voice.

“Sometimes you have to do something that most people wouldn’t understand in order to do the right thing.” He grasped her hand and kissed the white skin there.

“Do you think anyone will find them?” Trisha asked aloud. She was afraid of the answer but Lance looked down at her seriously then and shook his head.

“I doubt it. That place is far too remote to have anyone stumble up on it, besides,” He said then with a crooked grin.

“I don’t know any Trisha’s; just this amazing woman names Linda.”

One thing I felt it needed was more descriptive wording to create a more in depth feel. Just things like "She ran a hand through Emmy’s soft hair as they all lay in the soft bed together. "
You clearly have a creative mind, so I know descriptive wording shouldn't be a problem! Just saying it'd captivate a lot better. Thanks for sharing, I'll be sure to continue to see where you go with it!

I have no really big way to review this; just to say it's a good ending. Go over it with a fine tooth comb; ther are mistakes.

I let my cat sleep on the printer, but she is never allowed on the keyboard. You just can't allow cats to get away with too much.

It's an interesting ending. I feel a little uneasy about what they did. That doesn't make the story bad, though. I think it causes one to think, "What would I have done?"

Perhaps you could get into their heads a little more about how they feel about it, maybe even argue a little about it. Just a suggestion.

I enjoyed this story. It was complex and shows you have a good imagination.
