Chapter Seven

Duncan wiped his brow as he leaned across the arm of the shovel. James had sent him out here in the middle of this damn forest to dig a grave. He knew it was punishment for disappointing the boss, but Duncan still cursed as he looked down at the only half finished hole.

He had tried really hard this time to do exactly what James had wanted and even thought he had done a damn good job. Duncan wasn’t the brightest star in the sky and he knew this but James was still being too hard on him. Sure, it was true he didn’t want to kill Lance and James could think he had weak knees if he wanted too, but Duncan knew he just wasn’t cut out for that. It was sloppy work and if he made one mistake this entire thing could come crashing down on top of him.

He didn’t want to go to jail. He would do anything that the boss told him to do but he knew what he was and wasn’t capable of. He had seen plenty of crime television to tell him that it didn’t take much for some unlucky b*****d to get thrown into the can.

Duncan knew that as long as James was close he had nothing to worry about, as long as he stayed on his good side. James was like a double sided blade. He could save you from some bad situations but it didn’t take much to cut off your own thumb.

Rain and steam surrounded Duncan as he picked up his heavy shovel once more from the soft ground and sunk the blade deep into the earth. He was alone and safe in the heart of the woods. He knew these trees like his own fingerprint. He worked quickly and with no worries as he did what Duncan asked of him, knowing that James was taking care of his end of the deal back in the cabin.
