The Magic in Me

By Leonard Reid

A Short Story

I’ve never been fond of Tae Kwon Do, but my dad has always forced me to do it. Since I was a little kid I’ve always taken Marshall Arts, my dad and sensei have taught me to live it, love it, and definitely, most importantly, learn it. Well today I am talking the test for my 3rd degree black belt. And I am not prepared at all. My friends have been cheering me on forever and all I have left to do is beat the sensei. When I was young my mom died. I never new her well. But all my father and I have left to remember her is a picture of her, on my dad’s wedding day.  I wish that I were able to see her one more time. But, now it’s to late. Well I have to get on with the story. “Jayden your up” the instructor said. Well, I can’t keep telling the story so you have to listen to my thoughts. I bowed to the sensei and the battle began…

“Ugh, that hit really hurt” I told Jade my girlfriend and Jake my best friend from school.  As I walked home a felt something weird in the gut of my stomach I said.

Jake said “it’s probably from that kick straight to your gut”.

“And, so, he still got his third degree black belt” Jade said

“No it’s different it’s like a felling not hurt and trust me, right now I know what hurts and what doesn’t.”

As I walked home I noticed that all the lights were of and my dog was barking crazily.  At that moment I knew something was wrong. I ran into the house and I called my dad. At that moment I knew he was gone…….

I knew that someday this would happen my dad would always say stuff about this and how to survive. He told me to live with my aunt. He would always give me random quotes and taught me special moves that would make me feel like a jolt of power was passed through me peeping in and out of my veins. Trying to come through but I would never let it I would never trust the power. Know I feel that power and it’s stronger than ever. But instead of embracing it I put it away ran away from it. As I ran upstairs to pack up my things I noticed that he left one thing. My his coat his leather coat that always seemed so different but now, I knew he left it for me.

After I finished packing up I almost forgot to bring my drumsticks and my dad’s book. It was the last remembrance I would have of my dad other than my dads leather coat. I checked in his book there was nothing in it.

My dad used to say “When you embrace, then it takes place, When you believe then you see.”

I went downstairs and told Jade and Jake that I was leaving, to find my dad, and live with my aunt for a couple days.

“I’ll go” says Jade

“Me too” says Jake

Woof Woof” says Hershey my dog.

I felt that surge of power again and this time I embraced it. I felt a pull and all of a sudden I was at the airport.

oh, another hting,

“I’ll go” says Jade

“Me too” says Jake

“Woof Woof” says Hershey my dog.

...
"I'll go!" Jade said. Jake quickly added to what she said, "Me too." Caught in the moment my dog, Hershey, barked and wagged his tail.

Just a few improvements.
